Literature Bites
Privacy Policy
Effective 20 July 2026
Literature Bites is part of The Bites Suite. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and the choices you have. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the app well, and we do not sell your personal information.
Information we collect
Account information. When you open the app, we create an anonymous account through our backend provider, Supabase, so favourites, history, and journal notes can sync if you choose to sign in later. If you link Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive the email address associated with that account (when the provider shares it) and keep your existing data tied to the same user ID. Without linking Apple or Google, your synced data remains tied to the anonymous account on that installation and may not recover after reinstall.
Content you save. Quotes you favourite, your viewing history, and personal journal notes (text you add, optional attribution, and optional personal notes) are stored locally on your device. When you have an account session (including anonymous), favourites, history, and journal notes are also stored in your account so they can sync across devices after you link a sign-in method.
On-device app data. The app also stores information locally that is not uploaded to our servers, including:
- View counts, like counts, and recommendation preferences from optional onboarding
- Learning progress, including spaced-repetition flashcard state
- Streak and engagement history
- Theme, font, and display preferences
- Local reminder schedule preferences
- Home screen widget configuration
- Free-tier usage counters for feed scrolling
- Locally computed taste and recommendation profiles derived from your engagement
Purchases and subscriptions. If you subscribe or make an in-app purchase, the transaction is processed by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status, which receives a purchase identifier and receipt information tied to your app user ID so the app knows what you have unlocked.
Notifications. If you enable reminders, the app may schedule local notifications on your device and may also use Firebase Cloud Messaging (a Google service) for push delivery. When cloud push is used, a device notification token is stored in your account. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings. Reminder content is drawn from the quote library and your preferences.
Sharing. When you share a quote, you choose the destination (Messages, Mail, social apps, and so on). The app sends only the quote text and attribution you selected; we do not receive a copy.
What we do not collect
Literature Bites does not collect your name, phone number, or postal address unless you voluntarily include that kind of text in a journal note. It does not access your photo library, contacts, or precise location. We do not run third-party advertising or cross-app tracking. Learning quizzes and flashcard answers stay on your device; they are not sent to any server. The app does not contact AI or language-model services at runtime. Event names for analytics exist in the app code, but no analytics SDK is connected and no usage data is sent off your device today.
How we use information
We use the information above to provide and sync the app’s features, personalise your feed and recommendations, store journal notes you create, deliver notifications you have opted into, process and restore your purchases, fix problems, and keep the service secure.
Third-party services
We rely on a small set of trusted providers who process data on our behalf:
- Supabase — account authentication, database, and sync storage (privacy policy)
- RevenueCat — subscription and in-app purchase management (privacy policy)
- Apple — App Store payment processing and Sign in with Apple (privacy policy)
- Google — Sign in with Google (via Supabase) and Firebase Cloud Messaging for push delivery (privacy policy)
We share information with these providers only as needed to run the app.
Literary and editorial content
The app includes quotes and editorial text from literary sources, with attributions shown in the app. Some interpretive notes may be prepared during content production and are disclosed in-app where applicable. This editorial content is bundled for display; it is not derived from your personal data. Journal notes you write are your content and are stored as described above.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We share data only with the service providers listed above, or where required by law.
Data retention and deletion
On-device data remains until you delete the app or clear its data. Account data, favourites, history, journal notes, and notification tokens stored in Supabase remain until you delete your account. You can delete your account in the app from Profile (where available), or by emailing hello@bitessuite.app. If you sign out without deleting, the app may create a new anonymous account; data tied to your previous account remains until deleted on request.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent. To make a request, or to delete your account, contact us at hello@bitessuite.app and we will respond within a reasonable time. Under the GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California), these rights apply to residents of those regions.
Children's privacy
Literature Bites is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us at hello@bitessuite.app and we will delete it.
Data security and international transfer
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, and our providers maintain their own security safeguards. Your data may be processed on servers located in other countries, including the United States, which may have different data-protection laws than your own.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above and, where appropriate, by notice within the app.
