Art Bites
Privacy Policy
Effective 1 July 2026
Art Bites is part of The Bites Suite. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and the choices you have. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the app well, and we do not sell your personal information.
Information we collect
Account information. When you open the app, we create an anonymous account through our backend provider, Supabase, so favourites and history can sync if you choose to sign in later. If you link Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive the email address associated with that account (when the provider shares it) and keep your existing favourites and history tied to the same user ID. Without sign-in, favourites and history exist only on your device.
Content you save. Artworks you favourite and your viewing history are stored locally on your device. When you are signed in (including with an anonymous account), favourites and history are also stored in your account so they can sync across devices.
On-device app data. The app also stores information locally that is not uploaded to our servers, including:
- View counts, like counts, and artworks you have hidden from recommendations
- Onboarding preferences (reading frequency, era interests, and goals)
- Learning progress, including spaced-repetition flashcard state
- Streak and engagement history
- Theme, font, and display preferences
- Free-tier usage counters for feed scrolling
- Locally computed taste and recommendation profiles derived from your engagement
Purchases and subscriptions. If you subscribe or make an in-app purchase, the transaction is processed by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status, which receives a purchase identifier and receipt information tied to your app user ID so the app knows what you have unlocked.
Push notifications. If you enable notifications, we use Firebase Cloud Messaging (a Google service) to deliver them. This involves a device notification token, which we store in your account. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
Artwork images. The app downloads artwork images from our content delivery network (Cloudflare R2). These requests do not include your name, email, or account identifier.
Device motion. While viewing paintings in the feed, the app may read accelerometer data to create a parallax effect. This data is used in memory for display only and is not stored or transmitted.
Sharing. When you share an artwork, you choose the destination. The app sends the artwork title, artist name, and museum link; we do not receive a copy.
What we do not collect
Art Bites does not collect your name, phone number, or postal address. It does not access your photo library, contacts, or precise location. We do not run third-party advertising or cross-app tracking. Guide questions and answers stay on your device; they are not sent to any server. The app does not contact AI or language-model services at runtime. Event names for analytics exist in the app code, but no analytics SDK is connected and no usage data is sent off your device today.
How we use information
We use the information above to provide and sync the app’s features, personalise your feed and recommendations, deliver notifications you have opted into, process and restore your purchases, fix problems, and keep the service secure.
Third-party services
We rely on a small set of trusted providers who process data on our behalf:
- Supabase — account authentication, database, and sync storage (privacy policy)
- RevenueCat — subscription and in-app purchase management (privacy policy)
- Apple — App Store payment processing and Sign in with Apple (privacy policy)
- Google — Sign in with Google (via Supabase) and Firebase Cloud Messaging for push delivery (privacy policy)
- Cloudflare — artwork image hosting (privacy policy)
We share information with these providers only as needed to run the app.
Art and editorial content
The app includes artwork metadata, images, and editorial text drawn from museum collections and public-domain sources, with attributions shown in the app. Some descriptive labels are AI-generated during content preparation and are disclosed in-app where applicable. This editorial content is bundled or downloaded for display; it is not derived from your personal data.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We share data only with the service providers listed above, or where required by law.
Data retention and deletion
On-device data remains until you delete the app or clear its data. Account data, favourites, history, and notification tokens stored in Supabase remain until you delete your account. You can delete your account in the app from Profile → Delete account, or by emailing hello@bitessuite.app. If you sign out without deleting, the app creates a new anonymous account; data tied to your previous account remains until deleted on request.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent. To make a request, or to delete your account, contact us at hello@bitessuite.app and we will respond within a reasonable time. Under the GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA (California), these rights apply to residents of those regions.
Children's privacy
Art Bites is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us at hello@bitessuite.app and we will delete it.
Data security and international transfer
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, and our providers maintain their own security safeguards. Your data may be processed on servers located in other countries, including the United States, which may have different data-protection laws than your own.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above and, where appropriate, by notice within the app.
